Traveling with your furry friend? Does Lyft have pet-friendly rides? Read this to find out more about what to do when you need to get from A to B with Fido.
There are occasions when you may like to or need to have your furry friend travel with you on a ride-share. Perhaps you are taking Fido for his annual check-up. Maybe you just want your canine companion to come with you when you head into town to run a few errands. Is Lyft pet friendly? What is the Lyft dog policy? Let’s have a look at the answers to these questions and more on traveling via ride-share with your pets.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guarantees that all individuals with disabilities have the legal right to use their service animals in all public areas. This means that Lyft drivers may not discriminate against individuals with service animals by not allowing them in their cars. However, ride-share drivers do not need to make the same accommodation for regular pets or emotional support animals (ESAs). Bringing your pet along for the ride is up to the discretion of the Lyft driver. Drivers are entitled to refuse a trip with a passenger who wants to travel with their pet.
Your furry friend being in a carrier or wrapped in a blanket won’t change anything concerning the ride-sharing rules. Some drivers may feel more comfortable transporting you and your pet if your pet is in a carrier. However, they are still allowed to cancel the trip. Bear in mind, some drivers may not be able to accommodate a pet in a carrier because their vehicle does not have space for the container.
Lyft does not have a dedicated pet-friendly ride-sharing option yet. The platform leaves it up to the driver to decide whether they are comfortable with transporting other people’s pets. What you can do for the time being is to let your driver know that you have your pet with you and let them make the call about whether they want to accept the ride. The best thing to do is to check in with your driver by calling them as soon as they have accepted your trip.
